Our True Selves

by eloisedesousa

We all hide behind those pretty smiles
Hidden tombs of depravation
Glazed behind the sweet looks

Manacles of conversation holding the craziness within
Dilated pupils reflecting innocence
Whilst the diabolical lurks beneath the shallow surface

Watch the smiles around you the next time you’re out
Feel the pull of skin around your own mouth
Responding to the fake nuptials of communication

Maybe we recognise them, maybe we want to ignore it
Maybe, just maybe…
Those that don’t smile back, are actually honest!

  1. It’s so true. We tend to wear smiles and masks which we use to cover up our true feelings and emotions. What would happen if we were all real about our struggles, hurts and pain? Last spring I wrote a poem titled “The Mask” in which I pondered what would happen if I took off my mask and became more real. I’ve been trying to do that. It’s a journey. Anyway thanks for your poem on this topic. 🙂

If you enjoyed the poem. please leave a comment.
