Old Horses in a Field

It flies against the breeze
to dream of little things Leave
the cosmic things to God

For since Eden’s orchards
we have craved one thing Not
to be creature but Creator

The discipline of the hive
makes a sweet community While
free markets make ghettos

Two old horses in a field
statue still & nose to nose One
man’s heaven Another’s hell

who dreams of derby wins
of fortune & of fame And Why?
To sleep alone on sour straw

“I’d rather learn from one bird how to sing
than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance”

~ e.e. cummings
