Releasing skeletons

by Michelle Sherlock

Photo of wooden chinese dragon glazed with gold over doorway at Harrogate Royal Baths Chinese Restaurant

My story I want to tell

Releasing the skeletons from the closet

Sweeping the attic and basement clean

Lifting the carpet and removing the debris

But lips’ seal holds fast

Should some secrets ever be spoken?

What of forgiveness?

Forgetting?

Honour?

Release?

Would it really bring me peace?

Or just a hornet’s nest release?

I continue to wrestle with this perennial weed

Its’ roots never quite die

The ground remains uncleared

Forgiving and forgetting

Not quite the same

If left unspoken will it blight my life?

I want to tell my story

Yet again

I leave it for another day
