Tacking

Sailors

call it tacking

sailing into stiff wind

by steering first one way

then diagonally another

We really only need

a breath

you see

to move us a step

closer toward home

and with a breath

our flat sails will

billow slightly

once again

The secret

of successful tacking

is not to think of home

Instead to focus on shore

where markers of those

who’ve gone this way

still glisten

  1. The flow of this makes me think of the rocking of a boat at sea.
“We really only need a breath”…love this line. 🙂
