No Common Ground

by davidrjsealey

Faith’s beating heart
buried deep
with heads in the sand
and the forgotten road map
to Jerusalem.

Blood runs through
a classroom;
a tomb of innocence
with a smashed roof
and scattered sketches.

How can you follow
a road map
in fighter jets;
with rockets?

Voices silenced,
screaming through sand,
drowned out by the sound
of explosions.

  1. Keep telling us until we MUST listen . . . Israel has become the new Old South Africa: government by fear! And we are one of the last friends they have in the world . . . Go tell . . .

  2. I can’t imagine what it’s like to live where there’s constant war & has been for years.

    A beautiful poem about a traffic reality…must read.

  4. I personally think the verse about following a road map with fighter jets and rockets is such a good question. How do you live with the constant fear of death from above? How are the children supposed to grow up and learn that the whole world is not at war; that other countries (more advanced than the USA; no I am not trying to slander my country, I just do not believe in some of the policies and actions our government supports) do not live with the constant threat of severe injury and death?

    I realize that each side believes that they are right, but we (the USA and other countries) took land from the Palestinians to create Israel. Israel is a created thing. It is not a country created in the traditional manners that others have been. It is an idea of a country that continuously oversteps it’s bounds and then expects to be saved or justified by the US. Israel starts these attacks, and then expects that the US will back them because of our hand in “carving” it out of land occupied for thousands of years by another “tribe”.

    Disagree with me or be offended or call me unpatriotic or whatever, I do not care, but this problem was created by our government. It was not created by the Palestinians. They did not ask to have their land taken from them.

    I heard on the news this morning that over a thousand Palestinians have been killed compared to about 30 Israelis. What Israel is doing is not right or just……they are trying to take the remainder of what they think of as their “birth right” through force and fear. Why doesn’t anyone listen? Is it because they don’t care or because they choose not to see the truth? This conflict and the many others over the years since the creation of the idea of a country is not of Palestinian making; if one stretches their mind just a bit, and pushes the mental envelope, they will see that we (along with some other European countries) are ultimately to blame for all the wounded and dead in Palestine.

    • Exactly songtothesirens, a good point well made. I’m glad my poem inspired this πŸ™‚ Thanks for reading!

      • Thanks for writing it πŸ™‚ It is not often that poetry will ignite my opinions about what I see as completely wrong. I wrote a book…….excellent piece of work πŸ™‚

  5. It’s like people are walking around with eyes closed, their fingers in their ears, and singing la-la-la, I can’t hear you…….and this has been going for how long now. i remember watching the news as a child some 35 years ago, and Israel and Palestine were having problems. How long until someone just says enough?

  6. How inadequate are words … very well written and I agree with songtothesirens that that line stood out for me too … there was a time when we believed in peace when we’d think twice about bombing civilians … of course that was a very long time ago.

    Stop…when will it end? A must read…a beautiful and heartwrenching poem about the reality of too many people…lives lost…
