The River

by Peter Notehelfer

The river is eternal

A network of nerves

Spread out into canyons

To squeeze earth’s breast

Til every drop is sucked

Drawn drop by drop

Into a surging flow

It’s a great mystery

How all water is one

How it seeks after itself

Opens its door like a lover

To welcome itself home

To surrender itself

To the wild rush

The river bears

Its tears to the sea

To season the breeze

And sanctify the shore

Til purified the tears

Rise up once more

Within a cloud

To fall on peaks

Perfect diamonds

Within whose crystals

Hide all ecstasy & grief

For all the river loves

Just like the river

Endures in time
