somebody is dying somewhere, take a candle

by suicidallyanonymous

The trees are taller than I.
Their leaves stain my hair
with the delicate decay
from dark chocolate autumn.

Wisdom gets lost
in my teeth
around this time…
and cavities run
a sandpaper tongue
through my mouth.
I have nothing to show
but the ghosts in my throat,
and a scarred heart.

Today these cupcakes
are strawberry and buttercream.
Even the dessert mocks
the fractures in my
depleting youth.
Every new candle is lit
to count the years remaining,
until I too, perish.
