Spinster – Word Origins 2

by Venkat

From Middle English spinnen
With a –ster denoting women

Women working to spin, ordinary
During the seventeenth century

Soon, a term beyond the lowly
For unmarried woman of society

Later, by the eighteenth century
Added on a meaning derogatory

For a woman, fussy and prim
Past marrying age, old and grim
