Stay Today

by Peter Notehelfer

The fern

lazily stretches

her limber arms

outside the door

in the gray`light

and whispers

Stay today!

I have

no flower

to scent seduce

nor honeyed fruit

to sate the ache

God can’t fill

But stay!

In my

soft unfolding

palms hear songs

long gone un`sung

except in gardens

grown by those

who stay!

But I

hurried on

into the busy day

heedless unhealed

in self`absorption

I have no time

to stay!

  1. “unhealed in self`absorption” says it all

    • Yes, it does, doesn’t it . . . Most of our business offers no clue to where we are going but suggests we’re making good time, and convinced of our self-importance . . .

  2. I love this. It brings to mind a Walter Hagen quote, “Dont worry, dont hurry, and dont forget to smell the flowers along the way” 😊

  3. gardens grown by those who stay …
    how mysteriously marvellous.
    Enchanting work!

  4. beautifully done! loved it… 🙂
