The Plight

by SHIRLEY MAYA TAN

All right, Good night

Sweet dreams, Sleep Tight

Words we say

On a daily basis

To our dearly beloved

Safe travels,

See you soon,

Our Good byes

Are not supposed to be

Final Farewells

Everyday exchanges

We share

So much we take

For granted

Cherishing our own security

While numbing others’ loss

As days struggle into weeks

Time sharpens the anguish

Uncertainty gnaws into sanity

Still, answers elude

All we can do is hope against Hope

Fight the tears that’s breaking

Our hearts like a dam

We need a miracle soon

No, it is not all right

Many will not sleep tonight

They will not have sweet dreams

Can you hear their screams?
