The Naked Truth

by Venkat

Emotion becomes a robe
To hide weakness of thought
Unable to further probe
Thinking comes to a naught

Emotion becomes a shield
To protect thought’s fault
Unbearable to accept or yield
Reasoning thrown in a vault

Emotion becomes a weapon
To defend thought, hollow at core
Losing the inner battle,undone
Yet victory gestures to the fore

Emotion becomes an escape
To avoid an effort to think
Into pleasure of senses to ape
Allowing the brain to sink

Emotion becomes a rule
To kill thought by fear
Blindly obeying as a fool
A mechanical mind, too dear

We are too busy dressing our emotion
While the truth lies naked, bare
Too indulged to accept this notion
For growth of thought we have no care

  1. The last verse is very powerful. Interesting as the poem’s theme seems to fly against the very ethos of poetry, yet it argues the point so vociferously and crescendos to its conclusion. I liked this. Very clever.

If you enjoyed the poem. please leave a comment.
