Christmas Day – The Gift

by Peter Notehelfer

Christmas poem: Challenge.

We look

for the gift

in the wrapping

There where we hope

someone’s loving left it

Or in the greeting

where a heart

spoke it

We look

for Immanuel

in Stable trimming

But by the time we’ve arrived

naught’s left but brittle bough

& candle`dripping

Saints & Saviors

don’t stay

Immanuel is in the heart

or else Immanuel is Not at all
