A Man’s Best Friend

by Wendy L. Macdonald

A Man’s Best Friend

Unconditional love and respect

can win his heart

over the tidiest home

or the aroma of a feast

For it’s not through his belly

that his heart is won

but through unearned devotion

like a man and his beast

She is a wise woman

who cares to take note

that his response is awakened

in smiles and words spoken in kind

For no man can resist

such acceptance and admiration

from a partner who focuses

on his good points to find.

There is a reason

why a doghouse is chosen

for a chagrined husband

to turn to and hide

For where else can he find

such love and devotion

without the complication of words

as he ponders the woman inside?
