So Far

by beeseeker

Crowded, sullen grey clouds

Bear silent witness:

Vacant market stalls,

Double-wet cobbles

Giving less than nothing back

And a patient young woman,

In quiet violet coat, with

Once-black collars and

A battered cello case

Waiting in silence:

For the storm to pass?

For the right man to appear?

She believes the old myth

That says devil can’t

Cross the unfinished bridge;

Doesn’t realise that, so far,

The devil has never

Been tempted.

  1. Very Interesting…lovely imagery!

  2. Thank you. I have been aware for some time that witches are not able, it is said, to cross water unless they can see their way across ( hence hump-backed bridges!) but learned this, I think very local version from Austria about the devil is much less well known.
    The girl was really there.
The rest is, I hope, poetry.

If you enjoyed the poem. please leave a comment.
