Anguished Heart

by Caddo

(A Villanelle)

She was ne’er ablaze, neither mere flash of prism’s light—
Within her depths, burned darkest smoldering fire.
Anguished heart—pure love and passion would endless fight.

She’d dance for all to watch throughout the night—
And the soldiers, sabers resting, offered coin to hire.
She was ne’er ablaze, neither mere flash of prism’s light.

Sure, the row would begin ‘tween rogue and knight—
As curses flew, their vows were made, her mornings to acquire.
Anguished heart—pure love and passion would endless fight.

Behind silken veil, her kohl-smudged eyes hid thrilling fright—
The brawl might end in more ale drunk, no hope of romance to transpire.
She was ne’er ablaze, neither mere flash of prism’s light.

Hours wore on till e’en the moon was a wearied and pale sight—
Still she moved, shadowed undulations, for a lingering wakeful squire.
Anguished heart—pure love and passion would endless fight.

He rose to stay her with strong hand, lest she leave in lovely flight.
Her form, visage, already vanished! Spectral dream, melted roses ‘n sapphire?
She was ne’er ablaze, neither mere flash of prism’s light—
Anguished heart—pure love and passion would endless fight.
