The Song of Odin (Villanelle)

by tjtherien

Yggdrasil the ashen and aged three rooted tree
Omnipotent Odin, singular vision, one eyed
At the center of the nine worlds of cosmology
Where divine immortal would confront his destiny
Arrives with the wolves Freki and Geri flanking his side
Yggdrasil the ashen and aged three rooted tree
From highest branch, by the neck swinging Deity
For the Runic Alphabet commit suicide
At the center of the nine worlds of cosmology

Nine days and nights pendulum swung melodically
God of wisdom, shamanism and prophecy died
Yggdrasil the ashen and aged three rooted tree
Bore his weight until he was cut down by Valkyrie
While black birds Thought and Memory scoured country side
At the center of the nine worlds of cosmology
Odin gave man Runic Alphabet and poetry
And from his throne in Valhalla he beamed with pride
Yggdrasil the ashen and aged three rooted tree
At the center of the nine worlds of cosmology

  1. you’ve created absolute beauty, a tale that sucks you in! Exceptional Tj!

  2. Very nice TJ, i have made a Villanelle poetry category just for you.

    • Thank you Harry, I don’t know if that was necessary…I’ve been experimenting with forms and wanted to prove to myself I can tackle the strict structure of the villanelle…it is a very challenging form, but if I can do it anyone can…
